The holiday season is a time for celebration. Everyone is busy preparing gifts, food, and attending events. It is definitely the time to be merry. But while most of us are having a good time, several problems are put behind us. One of them is drug addiction. What is more interesting is the fact that it is on the rise during the holiday season.

For many, the end of the year brings good memories of families gathering together. However, the holidays can also be a darker time for some. With New Year’s Eve approaching, drinking is one of the biggest issues those suffering from addiction could be facing.

According to the Center for Disease Control, the most dangerous time of the year for drug and alcohol-related deaths are December, January and March.

Hamlet Smith, the psychologist at Life Strategies Counseling, said drug abuse is always something to keep an eye out for.

“I would say to avoid using drugs its plan, plan, plan.” Smith said. “Get an accountability person. Have a table set on your calendar to be around people who are not addicted to drugs. Who are not struggling with that everyday.”

Smith added the holidays can bring back a lot of bad memories for people which tends to lead to higher drug use.
