A new documentary will explore how star Cory Monteith died as a direct result of his dual addictions to alcohol and hard drugs.

The late TV star, who died aged 31 in July 2013, had a history of drug abuse which began when he was just 13 years old.

Eighteen years later he died, and while the cause of his death was not immediately apparent, the coroner ruled he’d been killed by “mixed drug toxicity, involving intravenous heroin use combined with the ingestion of alcohol”.

This new edition of Autopsy on Channel 5 will explore the lead-up to Cory’s death, and the tragic fact that just three months before losing his life, he had got  clean in rehab.

But Cory seemed to be fighting a losing battle against addiction since he was a school boy.

The Canadian had dropped out of school at 16 after attending a total of 16 different institutions, and turned to petty crime as well as stealing from relatives to fund his addiction.

But before Cory spiralled into destruction, a family intervention when he was 19 saw him go to rehab for the first time, leading the performer to later state “I’m lucky to be alive”.

Then in 2009, at the age of 27. Cory bagged the lead role of school football champ Finn Hudson in the all-singing, all-dancing TV drama Glee, impressing casting bosses with his “naive, but not stupid, sweetness”. Read the full story here.
