Simple home workouts using exercise apps can effectively reduce depressive symptoms in healthcare workers and could be a major tool to combat the global mental health crisis in the sector, says new University of British Columbia research.

The study, published today in JAMA Psychiatry, divided participants into either a waitlisted control group or an exercise group who were given free access to a suite of home exercise apps called DownDog, that included yoga, cardio and strength training. They were asked to aim for at least 80 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week over 12 weeks.

The positive effects were most pronounced among participants who completed an average of at least 80 minutes of exercise per week.

In the face of the escalating mental health challenges among healthcare professionals, a recent article on News-Medical highlights the potential of exercise apps as a crucial tool for combating this crisis. The article underscores the toll that the ongoing pandemic has taken on the mental well-being of healthcare workers and how the use of exercise applications could provide significant relief.

The article discusses the profound impact of stress, burnout, and emotional exhaustion on the mental health of healthcare workers at the forefront of battling the pandemic. Research suggests that incorporating regular physical activity into their routines can help alleviate the negative effects of stress and promote mental resilience.

Exercise apps offer a practical and convenient solution for healthcare workers to engage in regular physical activity, regardless of their busy schedules. These apps provide customizable workout plans, guided sessions, and progress tracking, making it easier for users to maintain their fitness goals.

In conclusion, the article emphasizes that exercise apps promise to enhance the mental health and well-being of healthcare workers. By integrating physical activity into their routines, these professionals can potentially reduce stress levels, mitigate burnout, and enhance their overall mental resilience.
